“★★★★★! Immaculately directed by Sam Mendes, it’s a poised study of how two actors of radically different temperaments sparred in the run-up to opening night…Thorne has deftly woven the elements together, while Mendes gets first-rate performances out of his two leading players. – Clive Davis, The Times

1964: Richard Burton (Johnny Flynn), newly married to Elizabeth Taylor (Tuppence Middleton), is to play the title role in an experimental new Broadway production of Hamlet under John Gielgud’s (Mark Gatiss) exacting direction. But as rehearsals progress, two ages of theatre collide and the collaboration between actor and director soon threatens to unravel. This fierce and funny new play by Jack Thorne offers a glimpse into the politics of a rehearsal room and the relationship between art and celebrity.

Directed by Sam Mendes (AMERICAN BEAUTY, 1917)
