“★★★★! A perfect film, one that exemplifies not only the formal and aesthetic capabilities of a medium at its most visually rich, but a capacity for empathy and compassion. – Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post
“CRITIC’S PICK! MOONLIGHT is magic… A film we’ve been waiting for for a very long time. – Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times

A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, MOONLIGHT chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

At once a vital portrait of contemporary African American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friendship, and love, MOONLIGHT is a groundbreaking piece of cinema that reverberates with deep compassion and universal truths. Anchored by extraordinary performances from a tremendous ensemble cast, Jenkins’s staggering, singular vision is profoundly moving in its portrayal of the moments, people, and unknowable forces that shape our lives and make us who we are.

MOONLIGHT, which famously won the Academy Award for Best Picture, opened at the Avalon on November 11, 2016 and played for four months. It is presented as the selection of the 2010s as a part of our year-long, special Centennial program, 100 Years of Cinema Magic.

A Q&A will follow the film, moderated by Washington Post chief film critic Ann Hornaday and featuring guest speaker Wil Haygood, author of Colorization: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World and The Butler: A Witness to History.
